Our hometown

Most roofs here are on an older house

Texarkana's own comprehensive plan says 57 percent of the city's housing stock was built before 1980, and that 55 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Census estimates put the median year a Texarkana house was built at 1979, out of about 16,500 housing units.

That matters for roofs. A house from the sixties or seventies is on its second or third roof by now, and its attic ventilation was designed for a different era. Worth knowing what is up there before a storm does.

Roof permits in Texarkana, Texas

The City of Texarkana, Texas requires a permit for a new roof and also for roof repairs, overlays, and shingle work. Its FAQ answers the question "Do I need a permit for a new roof, as well as roof repairs, overlay, and shingles?" with "Yes on all the above."

Contractors have to register with the city, free, before they can apply for a permit. Permits go through Inspections and Code Enforcement in the Municipal Building at 220 Texas Boulevard, and the city's current fee list puts a residential re-roofing or repair permit at $75 and a non-residential one at $100.

The city also limits layers. A new layer of shingles can go over an existing layer only once. If a roof already carries more than one layer, the old roofing has to come off and the deck has to be re-felted before new shingles go on. Hail and wind in Bowie County

NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 48 hail reports and 83 thunderstorm wind events in Bowie County, Texas in the ten years through 2025. Thirty of the hail reports were quarter size or larger. Texarkana's official weather station also records just under 50 inches of rain in an average year, which is a lot of water for a roof to shed.
