Roofing in Hope, Arkansas
Hope is straight out I-30 east of Texarkana, about 37 miles from our office. We do the same hand-nailed work there that we do at home.
About Hope
Hope started as a railroad camp. The first passenger train pulled into Hope Station on February 1, 1872. James Loughborough, the railroad's land commissioner, named the camp for his daughter, Hope. The town was incorporated on April 8, 1875.
Hope fought for years to take the county seat from Washington. The Arkansas Supreme Court settled it on May 11, 1939, and Hope has been the Hempstead County seat since. The Hope Chamber of Commerce held the first Watermelon Festival in 1926, and the festival still runs every August. Bill Clinton was born in Hope, and so was former Governor Mike Huckabee.
Getting to you
From our office on North Kings Highway, Hope is about 37 miles by road. It is nearly all I-30 east, and the drive takes about 45 minutes. That is close enough for us to come out for a leak, not just a full roof.
Hail, wind, and tornadoes in Hempstead County
NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 26 hail reports, 37 thunderstorm wind reports, and 5 tornadoes in Hempstead County from 2016 through 2025. The Shreveport office of the National Weather Service covers the county.
On April 4, 2022, hail from half dollar to golf ball size fell in Hope. On April 5, 2025, an EF2 tornado with winds near 115 mph tracked along the north side of I-30 and ended on the north side of Hope. Most of the damage was to trees, outbuildings, and carports, and no one was hurt.
Hail damage is easy to miss from the ground. A drone gets close to every slope, and the photos give you and your adjuster the same picture we see.
Older homes, full tear-offs
Census survey data puts the median year built for homes in Hope at about 1976. A roof on a house that age has likely been redone before, and an older deck can hide soft spots. We tear the old roof all the way off, check the decking, and put down Owens Corning architectural shingles, nailed by hand. You get a 1 year workmanship warranty and a 10 year manufacturer warranty.
Permits in Hope
The City of Hope has its own Building Services department. It issues building permits and does inspections inside the city, and it runs out of Public Works at 1603 W. 3rd St. The phone number is 870-722-2505. The city also takes building permit applications online through hopear.gov.
Hope has adopted the 2021 Arkansas Fire Prevention Code, which includes a residential volume. If you are not sure whether your roof job needs a permit, call Building Services and ask before work starts.
Arkansas rules that protect you
The Arkansas Attorney General says any contractor on a home job costing more than $2,000 has to be bonded and licensed by the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board. Bohon Roofing holds Arkansas license #56621, listed with the board for roofing, roof decks, and roofing sheet metal.
If you sign a roofing contract that depends on an insurance claim, Arkansas Code 4-88-903 gives you three business days to cancel after your insurer tells you in writing the loss is not covered. The contractor has ten business days to return your money, except for emergency work already done.
What to expect when we come out
