About Nash

Nash grew up in the 1870s where a Texas and Pacific branch line from Marshall crossed the main line, a spot people called Transcontinental Junction. A post office opened in 1884 under the name Park, after its first postmaster, and in 1906 the name changed to Nash for Manny Nash, the railroad's division superintendent. The town incorporated in the 1950s, and for decades a lot of the people living here worked at Red River Army Depot or the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant west of town.

It is still growing. Census figures put Nash at about 4,200 people and roughly 1,700 housing units, and Nash Elementary is part of Texarkana ISD.

Nash roofs are younger than Texarkana's

The median Nash house was built in 1992, against 1979 across the line in Texarkana, and a little over a third of Nash's homes date from before 1980. Nearly six in ten are owner-occupied.

A 1990s subdivision roof is right in the window where an architectural shingle roof starts showing its age, so plenty of Nash houses are coming due for a first replacement rather than another patch on a roof that has been done twice already. Contractors register with the City of Nash

Nash has contractors fill out a registration form with the company's contact information and license number, attach a copy of the license, and get it approved before they can pull a permit. The form goes to the permitting clerk, and permits and inspections are handled through City Hall at 119 Elm Street.

Nash has taken real roof damage

This is not a hypothetical for this town. On the evening of 9 May 2016, straight-line winds estimated at 95 miles an hour tore a path from east of Hooks almost to Leary and on toward Texarkana. NOAA's record of that event says a number of homes lost shingles and one mobile home lost its entire roof structure, with some of the most concentrated damage along Farm to Market Road 2148, County Road 2213, North Kings Highway, and Interstate 30 between Leary and Nash. It logged $300,000 in property damage.

Hail turns up here too. NOAA has quarter-size hail at I-30 and Kings Highway in February 2021 and again in May 2024, and trees and power lines down just southwest of Nash in April 2023. Our storm and hail damage page covers what to do after one of those nights.

Keeping a roof healthy between storms

A few habits catch most problems before they turn into leaks:

• Keep gutters clear of leaves and pine needles so water drains off the roof edge
• Trim limbs that hang over the roof before a storm brings them down
• Check the attic for stains or damp insulation a couple of times a year
• Watch for cracked plumbing vent boots, one of the most common leak sources
• Look for missing or lifted shingles after any strong wind
